Returnable packaging solution for marine engines

The Customer Case
The company is owned by a Japanese family and has a base in Netherlands employing around 200 people.
The customer manufactures marine engines which are distributed to their customer in eastern Germany.
They used to employ expendable corrugated packaging and each engine part was packed individually. This was problematic as one of their customers wanted to have the seal drive and cables preassembled and packed into the same box as the engine.
The original solution was also very awkward in the handling as the customer had to assemble the parts from two separate boxes.

The Nefab Solution
Nefab worked alongside PDC* and together they developed a steel returnable solution which could hold all the different engine parts together. This was made possible because of the ability to turn the steel plate on which the engine will stand.

Benefits for the customer
The benefits are substantial:
- One single packaging solution (Now the customer receives the complete engine including the seal drive in one package and will only have to connect the cables and install the propeller before the engine is ready for use)
- Handling is much easier for the customer
- Cost reduction: one packaging instead two
- Green solution : One returnable packaging solution vs two one way packaging solution

UN-approved boxes for shipment and storage of jerry cans and burners

Nefab has developed UN-approved boxes for shipment and storage of jerry cans* and burners for a Marine Corps.

The case emerged when the Marine Corps sought a UN approved jerry can.
At the same time the existing UN-box for burners and fuel bottles was considered to be too voluminous.
Since there are no UN-approved jerry cans on the market, Nefab saw the opportunity to develop solutions for both products, based on a common concept.

An aluminum box with customized interiors of polyether foam was chosen to provide the right level of protection. A plastic bag around the foam encapsulates any leakages and makes additional liquid absorbents superfluous.

Technical expertise from Dangerous Goods Management advised on the UN requirements.
The testing was done at the Belgian Packaging Institute and included compression test and drop tests on all 6 sides and on the corners.

The Nefab solution has been approved for air transport; a requirement given the rapid deployment of the Marine Corps.

This is one example of our ability to answer your demands in terms of storage, transport and logistics needs for a customized packaging solution.

Nefab’s Easy-to-Assemble Solution reduces cost and saves Time

The Client’s Case

This client designs, manufactures and installs automatic fare collection
systems for public transit projects throughout the world.  Nearly 10 billion commuters use them each year.  The company’s products include non-contact smart cards, magnetic-strip cards and transit hardware, including gates and
ticket machines.

The packaging system used by the client prior to consulting with Nefab consisted of a nailed plywood box with wooden dunnage/fittings and pallet.  It took a long time to
assemble, was heavy and consequently expensive to ship. The product also
suffered damage in transit.

The Solution: the Nefab ExPak “S”

Nefab’s in-house product engineering design team thoroughly reviewed this shipping system. With its extensive background in electronic equipment packaging, it quickly devised a solution: the Nefab ExPak “S”, a lightweight plywood crate with foam cushioning for shock absorption.

VCI bags were used to replace plain poly bags as well as desiccants to better protect against the possibility of condensation during transport.

Honeycomb was then added as sidewall support to prevent any side shifting and/or
scratching of the machinery.

 The Benefits to the Client

Nefab’s solution provided the client with complete packaging that:

• Eliminated shipping damage

• Reduced packing time by more than 75%

• Lowered shipping costs by virtue of the lighter weight

• Removed the need for nails or nail guns, thereby improving ease of use &
safety

• Only requires one operator to pack the product

WHEN AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WELL WORTH A POUND OF CURE

Nefab understands that global coordination of packaging solutions is critical to success in the international marketplace.

An increasingly common aspect of the global market is that decisions regarding packaging materials and designs are often made in one country only to be produced or delivered in another.  Packaging specifications and prototypes are often made in Western Europe or North America, while serial production will often take place in Eastern European or Asian countries, where labor is inexpensive.

Large inefficiencies in the packaging supply chain can easily arise if awareness of varying international requirements on packaging and testing specifications, such as sustainability, ergonomics, export/import and environmental regulations is lacking at the planning level.

For isntance, the availability of materials differs between geographic regions.  This can increase costs and labor if a is made in one part of the world when it could have been just as efficiently sourced and produced at the point of original use.

This is why Nefab has in place an international organization of manufacturing, design and service facilities in more than 35 countries, which allows it to provide unique, coordinated support to its clients seeking to master the ever-increasing complexity of the global packaging supply chain.

Safety First When Packaging Hazardous Waste and Products

Every year, countless shipments of hazardous waste and products transit around the world, putting the environment and all life forms at great risk.  While the packaging of non-hazardous shipments is designed to protect the contents from the stresses of normal transport, the opposite is true of hazardous shipments; packaging is designed to protect people, animals and the environment from the nefarious consequences of product breakage and spills.

The essential principle of packaging dangerous goods is to ensure the packaging is so dense and strong that none of the contents can break, spill or leak during normal handling in transit.

NEFAB’s wide variety of packaging solutions for hazardous products and waste positions it as an industry leader.  Our specialized products include ExPak (Crating & Packaging), RePak (Returnable Wooden Containers) and PlyPak.

To better optimize your packaging solution, consider these four aspects of your shipment:
• UN-number (UNXXXX)
• Transit method (air, ground, rail or sea)
• Shipment volume
• Inner packaging

NEFAB will help you make the best packaging choice.
