The Client’s Case
This client designs, manufactures and installs automatic fare collection
systems for public transit projects throughout the world. Nearly 10 billion commuters use them each year. The company’s products include non-contact smart cards, magnetic-strip cards and transit hardware, including gates and
ticket machines.
The packaging system used by the client prior to consulting with Nefab consisted of a nailed plywood box with wooden dunnage/fittings and pallet. It took a long time to
assemble, was heavy and consequently expensive to ship. The product also
suffered damage in transit.
The Solution: the Nefab ExPak “S”
Nefab’s in-house product engineering design team thoroughly reviewed this shipping system. With its extensive background in electronic equipment packaging, it quickly devised a solution: the Nefab ExPak “S”, a lightweight plywood crate with foam cushioning for shock absorption.
VCI bags were used to replace plain poly bags as well as desiccants to better protect against the possibility of condensation during transport.
Honeycomb was then added as sidewall support to prevent any side shifting and/or
scratching of the machinery.
The Benefits to the Client
Nefab’s solution provided the client with complete packaging that:
• Eliminated shipping damage
• Reduced packing time by more than 75%
• Lowered shipping costs by virtue of the lighter weight
• Removed the need for nails or nail guns, thereby improving ease of use &
safety
• Only requires one operator to pack the product
